The Gingerbread Man
"An old woman makes a gingerbread man. He jumps out of the oven and runs out of the house. He runs away from the old woman, the old man, a cow, a horse, and a fox."
This classic folk tale is retold in simple, accessible language for beginner English learners. In the story, a freshly baked gingerbread man leaps to life and decides he doesn't want to be eaten. He escapes from the woman who made him, shouting, "Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man!" He easily outruns an old woman, an old man, a cow, and a horse. However, when he reaches a river, the cunning fox offers to help him cross. The gingerbread man, who cannot swim, naively accepts the fox's help and climbs onto its nose, tail, and finally its head, where he is promptly gobbled up.
